The Cartwheel Inn Hampshire Food & Drink

ABOUT US

Our Story, Our Food, and a Warm Welcome

The Cartwheel Inn sits in the village of Whitsbury, where Hampshire meets Dorset and Wiltshire, surrounded by open countryside and well-loved walking routes. Housed in an 18th-century former farm cottage, the building was once home to a wheelwright and village bakery, with the original bread oven still visible beside the bar today.

Behind the pub lies Whitsbury Manor Stables, famously associated with Desert Orchid, winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Irish Grand National, and Mohaather, a Group 1 Sussex Stakes winner bred at Whitsbury Manor Stud. It is not uncommon to spot future racing stars in the surrounding fields, adding to the character of this special location.

The Cartwheel Inn is led by award-winning chef Paul Somerville and his partner Annette, who together run the inn and shape its warm, welcoming atmosphere. With over 30 years of experience in professional kitchens, Paul brings a deep passion for food and a commitment to quality. His career has included time at the Michelin-starred L’Ortolan near Reading, as well as The Creebridge and The Selkirk Arms, and in 2015, he was named Chef of the Year at the Dumfries and Galloway Life Awards.

Here at The Cartwheel Inn, Paul and Annette focus on honest, well-crafted food with a modern touch, using locally sourced, seasonal produce wherever possible. Alongside the kitchen, the bar offers well-kept cask ales, a thoughtful gin selection, and an array of fine wines.

We welcome locals, walkers, families, and four-legged friends alike. Whether you are calling in after a stroll across Whitsbury Down, enjoying lunch in the garden, or gathering friends and family for dinner, you can expect genuine hospitality, great food, and a relaxed countryside setting.
